RAPID RESPONSE

Partnership Spotlight: Rapid Response Emergency Support for Adolescent Girls and Young Women Living with HIV During the severe disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, MOYOTE implemented a critical emergency response to protect access to HIV services for adolescent girls and young women living with HIV in Nairobi’s informal settlements.

What We Did

  • Provided vital food baskets to support anti-retroviral therapy (ART) adherence during periods of extreme food insecurity.

  • Supplied transport support to enable beneficiaries to attend clinics and collect life-saving medication despite lockdowns and high travel costs.

  • Traced and followed up on beneficiaries who had traveled or were lost to follow-up.

  • Offered telephone-based psychosocial support and treatment literacy for newly diagnosed AGYW facing heightened stigma.

  • Distributed HIV prevention commodities, prophylaxis for HIV-exposed infants, PPE, masks, and sanitizers.

Key Achievements

  • Directly supported 500 highly vulnerable beneficiaries over a critical three-month period.

  • Maintained community-level HIV prevention and referral services by equipping Community Health Volunteers and MOYOTE staff with protective gear.

  • Reduced barriers to HIV treatment and dramatically improved medication adherence during the crisis.

Lasting Impact The Rapid Response intervention successfully mitigated the harsh impacts of COVID-19 restrictions, loss of livelihoods, and systemic disruptions. By ensuring continuous access to essential medicines and providing critical psychosocial support, the project protected the lives and health of hundreds of young women during an unprecedented global emergency.
